“FESTIVAL CAIRNS” GRAND PARADE

Saturday 22nd August 2009  sees the opening of Festival Cairns, an annual two week event.  This evening begins with a big street parade  travelling along the Esplanade to the City, then followed by a fireworks display on Cairns’ Inlet near the lagoon. 

We invite you to join the local LGBT community in this parade behind the Rainbow Flag.

Rainbow Flag History

Last year's theme was "The Village People"

The overall theme for Cairns Regional Council's Grand Parade this year is "Telling Our Stories". With that in mind the theme for the float and parade members is "Tropical Rainbow". The "Rainbow" has our history and "Tropical" is where we have ended up.

If you wish to be part of this year’s parade along the Cairns Esplanade here are the guide lines:

The assembly point for this year’s parade is Munro Martin Park, bounded by Sheridan, Florence, Grafton and Minnie Streets.
 
The already decorated float will be at the park by 4.30pm. 
The cyclists, walkers and the choir must be at the park to meet up with the float at 5.30pm for a set off at 6pm. 

Sequence of marchers for the Tropical Pride Marchers in ‘Festival Cairns’ Grand Parade is as follows:
 
1.  The "Tropical Pride Festival" and banner representing the GLBT   Cairns.
2. Parents and friends of lesbians and gays (Pflag)
3. Dykes on Bikes with the Tropical Pride Flags
4. The Rainbow Puppets (tall)
5. The Float:  fully decked in rainbow, spotlights, mirror balls and PA  system. Out Loud Choir will be singing at the front of the tray with Drag Queens and Kings on the back.
6. Walkers from the community
7. Long Rainbow Banner across the road to mark the end.
8. Please remember the Parade is “family-friendly”, so dress   appropriately!!
